Greetings to all the plant lovers out there! Planning to repot your new plants but you have no idea how to? It’s not that challenging even if it’s your first time at repotting a succulent, and if you’re an old hand at it, you may discover some helpful new techniques. To cut a long story short, let's get in it now!!
First and foremost, a day or two before you plan to repot, give your succulent a thorough watering. When the cactus mix is moist they are easier to loosen and be repotted.
Personally, I love to use a ready mixed cactus potting mix. However, you can mix your own potting soil. The recipe can vary but the usuals are five parts potting soil, two parts pumice and one part coir for a mixture that dries out evenly.
Pro tip ☺ : The right planting mix for cactus plants has superior drainage and will dry out quickly after watering.
Secondly, to remove the plant from its old pot, you can choose to either use a sharp object run around the perimeter to loosen the soil sticking on the planter. Slip your hand over the top of the pot, holding the plant’s stem between your fingers, and turn the pot upside down. Tap the rim of the pot firmly against a hard surface, such as a table, and then gently pull the pot upwards to remove the succulent.
Thirdly, remove about one-third of the old potting mix from the root ball, loosening it gently with your fingers.
Pro tip ☺: WHY? It's no loss because the soil is most likely contaminated with mineral salts.
Scoop in a layer of the cactus potting mix just enough so that the top of the roots are at the same level as the pot’s rim projection.
Set the plant in the pot, make sure it is completely centred, and begin adding more soil. Use your fingers, spoon or a chopstick to work the potting mix down among the roots. Press just hard enough to eliminate any large air pocket.
LASTLY, water your new potted succulent well, let drain, and you’re done!
Pro tip ☺: Your succulent may look a bit of a mess, but trust me, after its leaves surface dries up the soil will fall off by its own.
